Metzitzah B'Peh

Circumcision is as old as religion itself. God told Abraham that it would be a "sign of the covenant between Me and you" (Genesis 17:10-14). Foreskin sparked many early debates for believers, but it has recently found its way back in the news. Some ultra-Orthodox Jews believe that a religious leader should perform the circumcision and must use his mouth to draw blood from the wound. New York city health officials have cried foul. They cite a report warning against the ritual due to the risk of spreading disease. Jewish circumcisers have refused to comply with the city's new "consent waiver" regulation, because they say it's an attack on their religious freedom. So far, the city has declined to enforce it.
