Ragnarok and Roll
Organizers for the Jorvik Viking Festival predicted that February 22, 2014 would mark the coming of Ragnarok, an event which "sees the destruction of the world and the heavens," according to io9's Lauren Davis. She cast a skeptical eye on the whole affair: "It was just a little over a year ago that we were talking about the Maya non-apocalypse, and now it's the Vikings turn to kind of, sort of predict the world's end." Many press reports picked up the story and ran with it as a straight prediction, but she thought it was more likely a savvy marketing campaign.
