Pope Leo XIV formally declared St. John Henry Newman the 38th Doctor of the Church on November 1, 2025, during the Jubilee of the World of Education in St. Peter’s Square.
The occasion for the declaration was most fitting. Leo’s great predecessors St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI had both commended Newman’s teaching on education in the highest terms. For example, in his address at Newman’s beatification in 2010, Pope Benedict XVI said, “I would like to pay particular tribute to his vision for education, which has done so much to shape the ethos that is the driving force behind Catholic schools and colleges today.”
