I wrote in this space in October 2018 about a mysterious Iraqi blogger writing under the name “Mosul Eye.” He had just published astonishing photographs taken amid the ruins of the old city, recently liberated from ISIS, that had been the epicenter of global jihadism. Those photos showed stones, and on those stones were Hebrew inscriptions—emerging from oblivion, the unimaginable remains of a synagogue whose existence no one had suspected.
