I am the oldest of three brothers, and every four years we make pilgrimage together. In 2017 we travelled to Israel with each of their best friends. In 2022, delayed a year by the pandemic, we travelled to Greece with our father. And this year, in late May, we travelled to France, accompanied by two of my best friends.
Each trip runs nine to twelve days. We bid farewell to our wives and children and promise not to do anything exotic. We avoid, as best we can, hot spots and tourist traps. We set our sights on relics and ruins, museums and monasteries, cathedrals and caves, icons and saints. We eat street food. We sleep in hostels. We travel with backpacks. We walk a lot.
