The Inescapability of the Sacred

Two months ago, the Trump-Xi Beijing Summit was paraded across the internet as a bastion of hope for the future of Chinese relations with the West. Many foreign policy analysts have, as usual, mistaken ceremony for substance. 

The American state visit to China — the first since 2017 — produced honour guards, Boeing aircraft orders, and an invitation for Xi to visit the White House in September. On trade progress was made on everything from soybeans, to rare-earth metals.
