When news broke that Elon Musk had become the world’s first trillionaire, the internet responded with both wonder and disgust. The wonder is pretty easy to explain. A trillion dollars is a lot of money, more money than a Christian college professor like me would see were I to work for a literal millennium. The second reaction, disgust, is a little harder to understand. I confess that this reaction was mine.
As a member of Generation X, perhaps I can blame my aversion to enormous wealth on my upbringing in an era of spiking homelessness, crashing banks, and a growing distance between the very rich and the middle class.
