In the 25th chapter of Matthew our Lord describes plainly what is required for the faithful servants of God to enter Heaven at the Judgement. From this passage, we get the seven corporal works of mercy. The one I’d like to focus on in this article is the sheltering of the homeless.
Several weeks ago, I connected on a phone call with Winchester Rescue Mission (WRM) in Winchester, VA. They have quite the legacy in their area. In July of 1973, Morris Whitaker borrowed $20,000 with the goal of purchasing a building in downtown Winchester where he could shelter the homeless and provide a fresh start for his most vulnerable neighbors. By October, that mission had both a name and a mission: introducing those in the shelter to Jesus Christ so that He can make them new and restore their lives. The mission grew slowly but steadily and in 1985, bed space had increased to 35.
