Why Ten Plagues?

For some two thousand years, readers of the Book of Exodus have inferred that God had a hidden reason for sending ten plagues, ascribing tacit meaning to the number.

One of the most influential of such readers is the Church Father Augustine of Hippo (354-430 C.E.) whose writings went on to shape Western Christianity. In a sermon attributed to Augustine, “On the Plagues of Egypt and Ten Commandments of the Law,” he explains the connection between each of the plagues and the ten commandments.
