Beauty in the Broken Places

“God has created me to do Him some definite service; He has committed some work to me which he has not committed to another . . . I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons.”

St. John Henry Newman wrote these words in his Meditations and Devotions, but he also lived them. As an Anglican priest and later as a Catholic convert, Newman demonstrated a firm belief that the poor should be introduced to Truth through Beauty. Because impoverished neighborhoods are so often devoid of the finer things, Newman set out to establish parishes in these areas to win people to Christ, focusing on both the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy.
