Islamism as a political force may be declining. At least, that is one takeaway from Faisal Devji—one of the most astute observers of modern Islam—in his new book, Waning Crescent: The Rise and Fall of Global Islam. A professor of global and imperial history at the University of Oxford and the author of acclaimed works such as Landscapes of the Jihad, Devji argues in this latest book that Islamism—the highly politicized interpretation of Islam that has impacted the Muslim world over the past century—is finally in decline.
