Anti-Semitism and the Character of America

She had spent all her career studying anti-Semitism, yet when it appeared beside her in the hearing room, she mistook it for a procedural question. Pamela Nadell, professor of gender studies at American University in Washington, D.C., and director of its Jewish Studies Program, holds the full measure of academic distinction: member of the American Academy for Jewish Research’s (AAJR) executive committee, former president of the Association for Jewish Studies (AJS), and author of a new book on the history of anti-Semitism in America, supported by a National Endowment for the Humanities Public Scholar Award during its 2023–24 period of performance, Antisemitism, an American Tradition.
