So this is what it feels like to be unchurched.
Many people are disaffiliating from institutional religion, preferring individualized worship. My recent move to New York has taken me away from the Catholic church to which I had belonged for years. I don’t plan to be without my own parish for long.
Yet even my brief detachment has made me feel like something is missing. I suspect that, deep down, those who are cutting themselves off from organized religion feel the same way—even if they don’t realize it.
