Religious charities, including mosques and baptist churches, are accused of promoting misogynistic attitudes, for instance that women should obey their husbands, should not leave the house without covering up and should not wear perfume.
A report by the National Secular Society (NSS) details how some charities are receiving public grants or gift aid, and are also being awarded tax relief, while appearing to condone different forms of misogyny.
It cites examples including an imam who told his congregation it was permissible for a man to hit his wife if she refused to have sex, and another who said women who wore make-up and beautified themselves were “destroyed”. A sermon published on another mosque’s website questioned whether wives should work.
