This year marks 10 years since the attacks on Charlie Hebdo and the Hyper Cacher that brought terror to Paris and its suburbs. The violence began January 7, 2015, with a massacre at the offices of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and ended two days later with a massive police operation and two sieges. Over three days, 17 people were killed in assaults on Charlie Hebdo, Hyper Cacher, a kosher supermarket, and the Paris suburb of Montrouge. Police killed three suspects in separate confrontations. The attacks were reportedly carried out in retaliation for Charlie Hebdo publishing cartoons mocking the Prophet Mohammed. These killings marked the beginning of a devastating wave of extremist attacks in France and Western Europe, many linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.
