Christmas in Japan is a unique cultural phenomenon. Unlike in many parts of the world where it is a deeply religious occasion, imbued with traditions rooted in Christianity, Japan celebrates Christmas as a secular event, focused on light, romance, and a dash of novelty.
Nowhere is this more evident than in the stunning illumination events that light up cities across the country, with Tokyo Midtown’s “Midtown Christmas” being a standout example.
The Midtown Christmas event, held annually in the Roppongi district of Tokyo, has become a beloved seasonal attraction. It begins weeks before Dec. 25 and extends well into February, this year running from Nov. 22 to Feb. 24.
