Things seem really good for faith-based films right now. Kingdom Story Company’s “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” opened to box office success and rave reviews. The team behind “The Chosen” just announced a universe of spin-offs and an animated TV show. During the weekend of Sept. 13-15, four out of the top 10 movies at the U.S box office were films for the faith-based market (“Am I Racist?,” “Reagan,” “The Forge” and “God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust”).
And yet, the genre faces a demographic cliff. The market for faith-based films has always been driven by Christian moms. And as I wrote last year, with fewer women getting married and having kids (and single women increasingly leaving Christianity), that market is inevitably going to shrink.
