Preserving Religious Freedom in Taiwan, the Holy See’s Way

In early October, I sat down with Chou-seng Tou, former ambassador of Taiwan (the Republic of China) to the Holy See (2004–8), at his residence in Taipei. Ambassador Tou has had a long and distinguished diplomatic career. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1976 and served in a variety of posts in Senegal, Brussels, Greece, and Chicago, among other locales. In 2004 he was appointed ambassador to the Holy See, in the twilight of Pope John Paul II’s historic pontificate. In 2006, he was received into the Catholic faith at the Basilica of Sant’Eugenio in Rome.
