Fiducia Supplicans and Doctrinal Clarity

Theologically, Fiducia Supplicans is not a great piece of work or writing. Doctrinally, it stands on frail foundations; its biblical and traditional reference points are weak. ...Fiducia Supplicans also suffers from an unfortunate, even woeful, misunderstanding of how other forms of cohabitation relate to holy matrimony and salvation. Its intention seems to be to find new ways, even a whole new attitude, for the Church to accommodate people who find themselves in such relationships. But whether its solution is as promising as it claims to be must be open to debate, as it is mostly a pastoral question, for which universal norms are impossible to formulate. The proof, as it were, is in the pudding. The document will be judged according to its works, to be observed in those who are directly affected and in the larger Christian community.
