Unshakable in their belief, sustained by "torrents of speech, of statistics and excited proof," that alcohol was bad for the body, the soul, and the state of the union, they sought its elimination -- and, for a number of years between 1919 and 1933, succeeded: The 18th Amendment to the Constitution prohibiting the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors into the United States was their handiwork.
