Give Me That Old Time Religion

"America is experiencing a religious revival on the political left and that the heart of this revival is the deification of group identity." So wrote James Patterson in National Affairs last September. The idea goes back at least to 2018, when Andrew Sullivan announced the beginning of a "Great Awokening" in New York Magazine. "We have the cult of social justice on the left," Mr. Sullivan warned -- "a religion whose followers show the same zeal as any born-again Evangelical." So, the wokeism-as-religion meme is a few years old now. And yet it’s still gathering steam.
