Progressive Christians Complicit in Christian Supremacy

As we reflect on the implications of the Trump years there have been several books exploring the convergence of white evangelical Christianity, right-wing nationalism, and Trumpism as it morphed into a virulent form white Christian nationalism. These books offer critiques of the roots of this religious phenomenon as it came into full bloom during the 2016 presidential election and subsequent Trump presidency. What they share is a full-fledged takedown of white American evangelical Christian culture as purveyors and accomplices to the normalization of racism, xenophobia, sexism, and homophobia within civil and religious discourse. Rejecting the origin myth of the religious right as merely a response to the legalization of abortion in 1973's Roe v. Wade decision -- as Balmer's Bad Faith does most explicitly -- these authors trace the longer and deeper roots of white Christian racism in American culture. These authors reveal the theological and social infrastructure built by white evangelical Christians during the culture wars of the past fifty years.
