Evangelical Christians castigated Bill Clinton in wake of his "improper relationship" with the White House intern Monica Lewinsky. He had sinned. He would be stoned. Franklin Graham, the evangelical minister, wrote in The Wall Street Journal in 1998 that Clinton's "extramarital sexual behavior in the Oval Office now concerns him and the rest of the world, not just his immediate family," and that "private conduct does have public consequences."
