My friend Ryan Salzgiver was fully aware he was being pedantic last year when he complained to me at length about people talking like 2019 marked the end of a decade. His mathematics, though, were sound: since there was no year zero, you’d end up short by a year if they all ended on 9. If we want to avoid creating a nonade somewhere, we have to count 2020 as the end of a decade, not the beginning. It was a minor point, but who was I to complain about his complaint?
