My grandfather used to tell a story about an old man who went alone to church one Sunday morning when his wife was unwell. When he returned home the wife asked her taciturn husband what the preacher’s message was about.
“Sin,” he answered.
She pressed him: “What about it, exactly?”
“He’s against it,” the husband replied.
I’m afraid that joke represents the extent of theology many Christians acknowledge. Also, I think it is similar to many citizens’ brand of patriotism. We know what we are against; but do we know – much less fight for – what we believe in?
