Are Evangelicals Paying Too High a Price for Religious Freedom?

In December 2019, Christianity Today published a scathing editorial calling for President Trump’s removal due to his documented immorality both in and out of office. Only a few weeks later, the president launched a new election-year initiative at a rally in Miami called “Evangelicals for Trump,” complete with a Paula White prayer circle.

In 2016, religion played a major role in propelling an unlikely GOP candidate to the inauguration. President Trump, embattled by an ongoing impeachment saga and escalating international tensions, is hoping a similar wave will carry him to a second term. Those who count themselves among the church and MAGA faithful view this presidency through the lens of opportunity. Donald Trump may not be the best example of Christian decency, but he promotes policies that are kind to religious communities in ways his predecessor did not. For many, that is enough.
