When the term "born again" burst onto the national scene during Jimmy Carter's presidential candidacy in 1976, the phrase seemed exotic and maybe even cultic to some journalists. Four decades later, the term "evangelical" (roughly a synonym for "born again") has gotten worn out with use, and has lost much connection to its historic meaning.
