As polling begins in Gujarat, an objective observer can easily witness how the pendulum has swung, over the last 70 years, on the relationship between religion and politics. Jawaharlal Nehru candidly described himself as a ‘Hindu agnostic' or a ‘scientific humanist'. In his autobiography he wrote: “The spectacle of what is called religion, or at any rate organised religion, in India and elsewhere, has filled me with horror … Almost always it seemed to stand for blind belief and reactions, dogma and bigotry, superstition, exploitation and the preservation of vested interests.”
