The Lost Innocence of Ramadan IHOP Nights

I can't recall a Ramadan in America during my teens and 20s when I didn't meet my Muslims friends at IHOP at 3 a.m.

In the wee hours of the morning, over pancakes, eggs and steak, we'd get together for suhoor, the meal Muslims share before fasting during the holy month.

It's an all-American Ramadan ritual. I've had suhoor at an IHOP in every United States city I've lived in: New York; Washington; Ann Arbor, Mich.; and in the Bay Area.
