Pope Francis will receive US President Donald Trump on May 24th at the Vatican in an audience that could be like no other in the previous history of US-Holy See relations.
In the weeks leading up to the encounter, there have been visible efforts to portray it as a “normal” meeting between two very different world leaders who have never met before.
After a year and half of pointed exchanges – beginning with the pope's in-flight press conference from Mexico to the United States and then the president's harsh response – both sides have sought to clear the transatlantic map of unnecessary turbulence.
