2016, the Year of Living Apocalyptically

The language of impending doom, the end of the world and, even more commonly, the end or beginning of an era, is pervasive in discourse surrounding recent world events. The language has particularly surrounded the election of Trump, the dominating topic of our media at present, eclipsing even the events in Aleppo or the ongoing flood of refugees in Europe.

The echoes of biblical apocalyptic language and ideas in this discourse are inescapable. In an age of decreasing biblical literacy and Judeo-Christian religious affiliation, how and why do ideas from the Bible still creep into our present understanding of world events? Could re-examining the origin of this language in the Bible help us as we understand and respond to contemporary challenges?
