The Incarnation and Early Christian Philanthropy

Early Christian philanthropy was deeply informed by the theological concept of the imago Dei, that humans were created in the image of God - a belief that Christianity had taken over from Judaism.

In Jewish religious practice, Yahweh could not be visibly represented in any form (see Deuteronomy 4:15-19). Hence Jews were prohibited from making images, which were characteristic of polytheistic worship.
