Meet the "Muslim Mr. Rogers" of Nashville

Kamal drew inspiration for the coffee shop discussion from Jerry Seinfeld’s web series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” which features Seinfeld and a well-known comedian chatting in classic cars. But the impetus for Kamal’s person-to-person outreach started nearly 15 years ago in the days that followed the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Kamal, the American-born child of Afghan immigrants, was a fifth-grader when the World Trade Center fell and al-Qaida, an Islamist extremist terrorist network, claimed responsibility. The attacks increased negative attitudes toward Muslims in the United States and strained relations that many of the faithful are continuing to repair today.
