We have neither the resources nor ability to poll every athlete on his or her religious identification. So the medals chart is really an extrapolation, derived by cross-referencing actual medals totals by country with data on the religious composition of the nations of the world from the Pew Research Center.
The table is meant to offer not a definitive count, but a novel way of looking at the Summer Olympics. Feel free to root for your country, and your religion (or lack thereof).
