The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar on Meeting the Pope

Our colleague Max Bearak has written on The Washington Post’s WorldViews blog about why relations were frozen, and are now reconciling, between the Roman Catholic Church and the Cairo mosque, which houses a 1,000-year-old university.

The Vatican published a transcript Tuesday of an interview that the imam, Ahmed Mohamed el-Tayeb, gave in Arabic just after the historic meeting between the two religious leaders. The imam spoke about why terrorism should be abhorrent to Muslims who correctly interpret Muslim texts, and how his university is spreading that message to youths.
