Thousands of United Methodists will descend on Portland in the coming days to hash out key church issues, such as policies on gay clergy, during a 10-day conference at the Oregon Convention Center.
The United Methodist Church is a global Christian denomination with 12.3 million members as of 2014. It's a mainline church, which means it predates and differs from the evangelical movement. Like other mainline groups, The United Methodist Church is shrinking in the United States. But it's growing abroad, particularly in Africa and the Philippines.
