Richard Francaviglia's book "The Mapmakers of New Zion: A Cartographic History of Mormonism" digs through more than 100 maps related to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its members and provides insights into the church's storied history, drawing attention to Mormon mapmakers who have generally gone unnoticed.

Being a mobile religion — from the constant search of the early members for a place to settle to the vast missionary effort today — studying the trail of maps is an effective way to better understand Mormon culture and why the church is organized the way it is.
