Missing the Point About Nativity Scenes

Does your Baby Jesus sit on a manger of lies? Well, according to Jonathan Merritt, yes. “[M]any popular depictions of Jesus’s birth are filled with inaccuracies that conflict with the story told in the Bible,” says Merritt in a post that enjoyed No. 1 status on the Atlantic over the weekend.

Merritt points to white, blue-eyed Jesus, the Wise Men, and animals on the scene. It’s time, he says, to let these go, “or to at least broadly acknowledge their divergence from history.” He makes several good points in the piece, but let’s ask the question:
