Getting to the Root of TULIP

A couple of months ago I wrote about total depravity (also known as original sin), the first of five points of Calvinism known by the acronym TULIP. The other four are unconditional election (no consideration of merit in the individual), limited atonement (Jesus died for the many, not all), irresistible grace (when God calls those elected into salvation, they cannot resist), and perseverance of the saints (once saved always saved).

Calvin developed this theology when people believed they could fix their own sins by doing good works or paying money to the church. He taught that people are totally incapable of saving themselves but rather are saved by God’s grace through faith. Calvin’s theology has led many into paths of humble and joyous service.
