Tony Abbott, Australia’s recently ousted prime minister and a devout Catholic, was the victim of a growing anti-Catholic and antireligious bigotry, according to George Brandis, the attorney-general.
Mr Brandis said Mr Abbott, a former trainee priest, was subject to “bigotry at its most shameless” and that many of the former leader’s critics were hypocrites who proclaimed to oppose bigotry.
