My Sunday column was the latest installment in my strange, now year-old series of Catholic critiques of where my churchâ??s supreme pontiff seems to want to take the faith. But since the column was focused on church politicking and the mechanics of papal power, it seems worth trying to explain a little more why conservative Catholics are consistently un-reassured, in the ongoing argument in Rome over communion for the divorced and remarried, by our liberal co-religionistsâ?? insistence that nothing doctrinal, nothing beyond the â??pastoral,â? nothing essential to the church, is being opened for debate.
