We Catholics are a strange bunch. Weâ??re known for preserving many traditions and customs that can at times seem curious to a modern audience. One such custom is our deep appreciation for relics. We treasure our relics, and we make pilgrimages to pray before them in reverence and deep gratitude.
So when Pope Francis arrives in East Harlem to visit Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic School today, many people might view this moment as a sort of â??pilgrimage,â? a nod to the â??relicâ? that is Catholic schooling in the United States. But that would misunderstand Pope Francis and his pontificate.
