Eight years ago, my husband, children, and I left the comfort of our extended family in the Rocky Mountains journeying more than a thousand miles to the Lone Star State. While we did not know a soul in Texas, we put our trust in God and came for my husbandâ??s graduate school, which began only two days after our arrival. My children marveled at the palm trees, humidity, and diverse population. Coming to Texas was a new adventure for us.

Since we beat our moving van to our new home, we spent the first few nights sleeping in sleeping bags, stored our food in a cooler, and ate our meals on our fireplace hearth. We shooed out frogs that had gotten in our houseâ??perhaps before we did. We battled tree roachesâ??the biggest bugs we had ever seenâ??which we discovered not only crept in at night, but could fly!
