Mormons in Nazi Germany

Patrons of Pioneer Book in Provo were treated to the equivalent of a college level history lecture June 4. In the upstairs nook of the store, David Conley Nelson spoke on his book, “Moroni and the Swastika: Mormons in Nazi Germany.”

Two of his colleagues, German linguist Alan Keele and playwright Tom Rogers, were present. Both are former Brigham Young University professors involved in the study of Mormons in German history. Keele co-authored the book, “When Truth was Treason: German Youth against Hitler – The Story of the Helmuth Hübener Group,” one of the first historical treatments on Hübener and his friends. Keele was able to frame the historical narrative around the first-hand account Karl-Heinz Schnibbe, an actual participant in the group.
