The Founding Fathers were men of faith. And for many of them — Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson, to name a few — that faith took the form of Deism.
A worthy discussion of Deism would fill the rest of this newspaper, but here are some basics. At heart, Deists believed in God the Creator, though they rejected the supernatural and felt spiritual truth was best found through thought and observation. They saw the religious rules of their day as confining. Deists were looking for a larger path.
