Some people have it in their heads that ancient Christians frowned on sex. They might allow that the average parishioner liked toâ??in decidedly anachronistic languageâ??get it on. But the idea that this might be sanctioned by their priests and bishops doesnâ??t fit the stereotype.
Arenâ??t all these preachers and theologians sour old killjoys? Maybe Augustine, but thatâ??s a little unfair to the man. His views on sex are complicated by a few factors, not least of which might have been his personal history.
