The most gripping sequence in Dead Raisers, a 2013 documentary film following a gang of evangelicals Christians who say they can raise the dead, stars a man who introduces himself as Chuck the Cannabalistic Humanoid Underground Killer. He’s middle aged and has black heavy metal hair tied in a ponytail. In the film, we watch him putting his hand portentously on the knob of a nondescript door. “This is the room where it all took place,” he tells the film-maker. “This is where I died.”
Chuck – real name, Mark DeDio – tells the story of the day he went to hell. He used to be a troubled drug user – “I had upside down crosses carved into my hair and 666” – and one night, in December 2006, his girlfriend threatened to leave with their children. DeDio responded by taking a huge draw on some unnamed narcotic.
