In the United Methodist Church’s Book of Discipline, same-sex marriage is not allowed, nor are LGBT clergy. The General Conference of the UMC denomination may take up the issue at its next conference in 2016, but until then, some United Methodists are still hoping to change the heart of the church.
Bishop Hope Morgan Ward, who leads the North Carolina Conference of the UMC, issued a letter a few days after the October court ruling in North Carolina overturning the ban on same-sex marriage.
