In Faith, Doing Beats Knowing

Every year the online science journal Edge asks a question and solicits responses from leading thinkers and practitioners across a range of fields. The question for 2014 was What Scientific Idea is Ready for Retirement? Among the 174 answers, Yale professors Laurie R. Santos and Tamar Gendler suggested “Knowing is half the battle.”

The reference goes back to the original G.I. Joe cartoon, which I dutifully watched as a child. The show ended with a well intentioned but mostly silly public service announcement. The script was the same every time. A G.I. Joe character would rescue a kid, offer some advice, and close it out by saying, “Knowing is half the battle.”
