Some people approach open ethical and moral questions by assuming if the Bible lays down no explicit prohibitions, then it’s fair game. This version of “Christian liberty” was my favorite doctrine in my twenties. But there’s a difference between being free and being wise, something I ably demonstrated during the same decade.
In discussing the various snares of the devil, John Chrysostom urged his hearers to guard themselves against more than sin. He included the source of it as well. If you want to avoid the freeway, in a picture from a different era, stay off the onramp.
